New British horror movie so ‘disturbing’ horrified viewers are fleeing cinemas

A new British horror film has been called ‘disturbing’ by viewers, with some admitting they left recent screenings because they felt so uncomfortable.

Men – written and directed by Alex Garland, whose credits include Ex Machina (2014) and Annihilation (2018) – is folk horror that stars Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear.

The film follows Harper (Buckley) who heads to the countryside in the wake of a tragedy, where “someone or something from the woods seems to be stalking her”.

A synopsis of the “feverish and shifting” horror adds, “What begins as quivering terror becomes a fully-formed nightmare, inhabited by its darkest memories and fears.”

He drew particular attention to the public response, with viewers recently taking to social media platforms like Twitter to share their thoughts on the matter.

One wrote: “[Men] is one of the most disturbing things I have ever seen. Another said: “Tense, terrifying, poignant. He’ll stay with me for a few weeks for sure!”

Another wrote: “One of the most visually disturbing movies I’ve ever seen! I’m not afraid […] in the movies a lot but [the second half] made me extremely uncomfortable!”

“It was awesome and had some of the most horribly disturbing footage for a final act I’ve ever seen,” a third viewer tweeted. While another described it as “disturbing”.

“MEN was crazy, bold, bizarre, shocking and one of the most unsettling movies in my recent memory. Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear were phenomenal,” said another.

Another viewer tweeted, “Just saw Men. Definitely one of the most disturbing scenes ever. Oh my god what was that?” While one viewer said the final act was “so disturbing”.

And another person wrote recently, “I’ve seen a lot of disturbing and horrifying horror movies, but ‘Men’ really made me want to get out of the theater being so disturbed.”

Others on social media have reported seeing people walking out of the cinema during the film, with many reports about it appearing since its release.

Discussing her own experience, one person alleged in a YouTube video review that she herself had “stepped back” because the new film had “deeply disturbed” her.

Men is playing in theaters nationwide.
