Since 2001, the Screamfest Horror Film Festival has served as a launching pad for some of the best franchises and filmmakers in the genre. Movies such as The human centipede, 30 days of night, Trick or treats, and even Paranormal activity debuted at this iconic festival, which prides itself on being the largest and oldest horror festival in the United States.
Now, for their 21st edition, Screamfest has announced the first wave of their incredible line-up. Hailed as the âSundance of Horror,â Screamfest is proud to showcase new work from independent filmmakers from around the world.
From October 12 to 21 at the TCL Chinese Theater, Screamfest invites audiences to come back to the big screen for a collective experience they won’t soon forget.
Here’s what to expect from Screamfest
Screamfest opens October 12 with the North American premiere of Retaliation. The film follows a pastor who discovers a dark underworld as he searches for answers regarding the brutal murder of his daughter. Directed by Bridget Smith and Samuel Gonzalez Jr., Retaliation Also features an original soundtrack and cameos from some of rock music’s biggest names, including Five Finger Death Punch, Tommy Lee, Papa Roach, The Hu, Ice Nine Kills, and Escape The Fate. Marc Menchaca (Ozark), Michel Lombardi (Save me) and Joseph Gatt (Game Of Thrones) star in this horror thriller that reveals a game of revenge played using a new set of rules.
Three other films will also make their North American debuts at the festival. Richard Waters’ dark folk horror Take out the fear traps its protagonists in an insoluble labyrinth where a sinister presence awaits them. Clare Foley stars in sci-fi horror The changed where an alien presence takes possession of the hearts and minds of his city. Insulation depicts nine stories of terror that are woven together as distant people work to survive an increasingly deadly epidemic.
US premieres at the festival include Russia #Blue whale produced by Timur Bekmambetov, who follows Dana as she struggles to uncover the truth behind her sister’s suicide; Argentinian fantasy horror film Nocturna: Face A- The Great Night of the Old Man which depicts an old man’s journey to rethink his past and present and question his reality; and Kratt by Rasmus Berivoo in which children come across an instruction manual for creating a supernatural being.

The festival will also feature a Special Presentation by Daniel Farrands Aileen Wuornos: American Boogeyman starring Peyton List and Lydia Hearst, who follows the famous killer through a little-known chapter of her life in Deland, Florida. You can see the full lineup on their website.
âAfter a difficult year for cinema, we are delighted to be returning home to the TCL Chinese Theater for our latest scare lineup,â said festival founder Rachel Belofsky. âWhile last year’s drive-ins allowed us to continue celebrating horror films as a community, we missed out on the magic of the traditional theatrical experience. “
Formed in August 2001 by film producer Rachel Belofsky, the Screamfest Horror Film Festival is a 501 (c) (3) female-led non-profit organization. Their goal is to provide genre filmmakers and screenwriters with a venue to showcase their work in the film industry.
